Mica's Macaca: Lax airport security "doesn't bother me"! (FL-07)

Challenger John "Jack" Chagnon is demanding that Congressman Mica apologize to all Florida residents for his stunningly insensitive, arrogant, and patronizing interview on Orlando's CBS Affiliate Channel 6. Watch this astounding video at:
www.local6.com/problemsolvers/10228089/d etail.html?taf=orlpn
Mr. Mica -- House point man on airport security - summarily dismissed taped evidence of dangerously lax security procedures at Orlando International Airport (OIA).  This is another new low for a Republican who has stayed too long in Congress. Mr. Mica not only downplays these security breaches, but even takes a flippant attitude towards victims of other airport bombings.

FL-07: Jack Chagnon wins TV Debate

Unsolicited report from a constituent yesterday: On Sunday, October 29 Pat Duggins hosted WMFE's " Ballot 2006 Debate".  I tuned in to watch Congressman John Mica (R) debate Marine veteran and challenger John Chagnon (D) of St. Augustine. Sadly there was no debate.  Mica was a "no-show", declining-to-debate, slacker.

During the half hour program, John Chagnon showed again and again that he has the "right stuff"  to represent Congressional District 7. Chagnon plainly and intelligently answered questions and confidently looked straight into the camera. He explained how Mica's votes have hurt middle class families and students, that loyalist Mica still supports George Bush's failed "stay the course" of endless war, and tax cuts for the wealthiest. More importantly, Chagnon had sensible answers, not a "tap dance" or stammers, to the debate questions.

Mica's unexcused absence shows that he has no respect for C.D. 7 voters, troops and their families during a war that has lasted longer than WWII.  Maybe Mica skipped the debate because he just couldn't figure out how to explain his votes against working families, veterans, and the environment.  I say:  Congressman "No-Show" Mica must go!

(P.S.  To Dixie:   I have never met John Chagnon.  Last spring, three friends and I delivered a petition, with over 100 signatures of voters from C.D. 7 who requested that the cuts in social programs be stopped and that Congressman Mica take a stand for the people, to Mica's main district office in Maitland.  We were told by the secretary his "scheduler in D.C." would make a appointment for us to speak with Mica.  We are still waiting for that meeting.  Another no-show Mica event!)

FL-07: Newspaper gets "Quid" for Pro Quo endorsement

This week, the Daytona Beach News-Journal's endorsed John Mica (R) FL-07 rather than "Jack" Chagnon (D).  We knew they would, despite Mica's zero voting record rating on the environment and every other Democratic Party cause the New-Journal trumpets in its daily editorial positions.
In this crucial year, then, why not endorse a charismatic ex-Marine challenger whose literature and speeches takes those same Democratic stances rather than pandering to Southern conservatives? Because Mica got Federal "pork" for the News-Journal Center for performing arts, dream of publisher Tippen Davidson, wannabe symphony conductor and classical music snob.
Ironically, Tippen insisted on a site for his too small and unneeded Center that local environmentalists fought a losing battle to block. Cox, a 49% shareholder at the time, sued the News-Journal for using their corporate funds for a vanity project.  The paper settled by buying up Cox's shares.  Help us by emailing David Wiggins, Editorial Page Editor, at david.wiggins@news-jrnl.com  See our letter to the editor below:

Poll Results: FL-07: John ("Jack") Chagnon (D) vs. John Mica (R)

P r e s s  R e l e a s e

Florida's 7th Congressional District, October 16, 2006: The results of a scientific poll of Florida's 7th Congressional District race between John ("Jack") Chagnon and John Mica (R) were released today.  The polling was conducted from Oct. 4 - Oct. 11 by Einhorn & Lewis, Inc. of Daytona Beach, one of the most experienced and respected bipartisan political polling firms in East-Central Florida.

The sample of 501 likely voters was collected from randomly-sequenced data obtained from elections supervisors in all six counties of the 7th District: Flagler, Orange (Orlando), Putnam, St. Johns (s. Jacksonville suburbs), Seminole (n. Orlando), and Volusia (Daytona Beach).  The stratified sample matched the current distribution of registered voters in the District by gender, race, party affiliation, and county of residence.  All results refer to likely voters and have a 4 percent margin of error, unless otherwise indicated.
